There is a healthcare crisis in America and chronic disease remains our biggest challenge. One in two Americans has a chronic disease and one out of four has multiple chronic illnesses. Healthcare practitioners have become increasingly unhappy and feel “burned-out” because the burden has become so real. Medicine has been simplified to one diagnosis matched to one treatment, typically a prescription medication. Healthcare practitioners don’t have the time to listen to patients, let alone provide the education and guidance needed to improve their lives and health.
I found this out all too well as I was going through NP school. I had only lived in the NICU world of tiny sick infants and was a bit oblivious to the adult population. However, in my last semester of NP school, I had the sinking feeling of “is this really what I want to do with my life?” So many patients, so many health conditions, so many medications, and no one seemed to be getting better. I was overwhelmed and saddened by what I saw and my inability to help. Insert functional medicine. After going on a vacation in Mexico and meeting a physician trained in functional medicine and doing some research about it, my eyes were opened. I knew that would be the path I eventually wanted my career to go.
Here at Vine Healthcare, patients typically present to see either Dr. Scott Antoine or Dr. Ellen Antoine feeling hopeless and overwhelmed because of their numerous, often serious, chronic health concerns. They are experts in ‘medical detective’ work and using Functional Medicine to address complex medical issues….but they are not their patients primary care providers, they are consultants in their care. So what are those patients who were going back to their doctors for their routine yearly visit to do when they have to explain why they no longer need their prescriptions or why they are now taking supplements? Better yet, why they want a reverse T3 to be ordered to get a full picture of their thyroid? And what about those who feel pretty decent and do not yet have chronic conditions, but desire to stay that way and want to focus on prevention?
That is where I come in. I am an expert in primary care and my role here is to provide functional medicine primary care services—including physical exams, acute care visits, chronic disease management, and ordering preventative labs and testing. These appointments will be longer than your typical appointment, often lasting 30 – 60 minutes or more if needed. I will get to know you, build a relationship with you, and most importantly listen to you! Everyone is unique and an individualized treatment plan will be created just for you. While I can and do prescribe medications when absolutely needed, my goal is to get people off medications. You will not automatically receive a prescription from me for every health concern. We will work together to optimize your health using a preventative and holistic approach. I will help you to learn the cumulative effect of your daily decisions and the negative impact they could be having on your health. Read more about me here.
My goal is to empower you to make better decisions that will affect your health. I am currently accepting new patients and we have just rolled out two new health assessments – one including food sensitivity testing and another looking at advanced lipid testing.
