Ozone Therapy has the ability to reactivate your body’s innate healing systems. Ozone is simply a molecule consisting of three oxygen atoms. Ozone gets most of its attention due to its effects in the stratosphere, where it blocks UV rays. Medical ozone, which is used in its sterile and therapeutic form, has been used for more than a century to successfully treat numerous conditions and diseases.¹
Ozone has been used for decades and is common in Europe. We have seen firsthand the positive effects of ozone therapy in our practice and so we continue to use it for certain conditions.
Conditions ozone therapy may benefit include:¹
- Chronic infections
- Wounds
- Geriatric conditions
- Macular degeneration
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Osteoarthritis
- Cancer
Additional conditions we have seen improvement in with ozone therapy include:
- Mold related illness/exposure (CIRS)
- Lyme disease and other coinfections
- Chronic fatigue
- Fibromyalgia
- Other autoimmune diseases
- Multiple sclerosis
- Neurologic disorders
- Immune dysfunction
- Chronic pain
What is Ozone Therapy?
When it comes to ozone therapy, there are a number of ways in which it can be administered. In our office, the four ways we use ozone therapy include:
- IV Ozone – major autohemotherapy (MAH)
- Ozone steam sauna
- Soft tissue and joint ozone injections (Prolozone)
- Rectal and vaginal ozone therapy
IV ozone or major autohemotherapy (MAH) is a treatment process where we draw your blood, infuse it with ozone, and administer it back into your body. We have found this to be very effective in treating chronic diseases (listed above) that often involve dysfunctional circulatory system symptoms or widespread inflammation that needs to be brought down quickly.
Ozone steam sauna combines ozone therapy and steam sauna therapy. Saunas are one of the most effective detoxification techniques because they stimulate sweating which increases blood circulation, reduces inflammation and pain, and eliminates toxins through the skin.
When we combine the steam sauna with ozone therapy it allows ozone to be introduced through your skin via the bloodstream. The humid air opens your pores and allows ozone into your body more readily. Through your skin, ozone enters the bloodstream, fat, and lymphatic system. It is an incredible, non-invasive way to experience ozone therapy!
When the sauna creates hyperthermia (raising body temperature to levels that help to destroy bacteria and viruses), this heat causes sweating. The ozone being pumped into the sauna space and therefore in the air causes increased flow of lymph through your lymphatic system. Your lymphatic system is incredibly important for detoxification. Through this process, the ozone steam sauna can help you achieve optimal health. Besides, it feels great!
Soft tissue and joint ozone therapy (Prolozone) allows us to target areas of the body that need immediate inflammation and pain reduction. Soft tissue and joint ozone therapy is especially effective for people with injuries/trauma or conditions causing joint pain like rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.
Rectal and vaginal ozone therapy is a targeted therapy where we can use a small catheter attached to a bag filled with ozone gas and are able to instill the ozone gas directly in to these areas of the body. Application is similar to an enema or douche administration but with air instead of a liquid and it is done in the privacy of our office. Rectal and vaginal ozone therapy may be chosen for certain gynecological conditions, anal fissures, hemorrhoids, fistulas, gynecological or GI related malignancies, among other conditions. Rectal administration of ozone is not limited to treating diseases of the rectum, however, because it can be very helpful for detoxification and liver conditions since the portal vein delivers ozone from the GI tract directly to the liver.
How Does Ozone Therapy Work?
Ozone therapy works by activating the immune system, reactivating antioxidant systems, and through stimulation of oxygen metabolism.1 Ozone therapy also has a powerful disinfectant effect and helps treat infections caused by bacteria, fungi, yeast, viruses, and protozoa.
We have found ozone therapy to be extremely effective at reducing inflammation. One of the benefits of ozone therapy is that it allows us to target specific areas of the body that are especially at risk if inflamed. Depending on which method of ozone therapy is being administered there are more specific benefits.
